Why? What would the alternative be? `Get messages for a random selection
of accounts'?

The button should always be visible, just not necessarily enabled.

It should be enabled when a news server is selected. In that case, it
would update the message counts for every group on that server, just as
expanding the server's twisty does.

That's a poor choice of terminology. The intuitive meaning of
`authenticated accounts' is those which require a password -- that is,
all of them.

Why? The fact that I don't trust the rest of my family not to check my
e-mail (and therefore don't ask for Mozilla to remember the password),
shouldn't mean that I have to go around checking all my mail accounts
individually. A single click of the `Get Messages' button should check
all my accounts. (In the unlikely event that I just want to check an
individual account, I should be able to do that from a `Get Messages'
submenu in the `File' menu.)

Until I understand what the pref is for, I can't comment on the rest of
your questions.
