Setting the preferences for SMTP Server

Hi All,
   I have a small problem. I am trying to set the SMTP server.
My SMTP server needs authentication to send the mail too.
Older browser's used to pop-up a message asking for username-password.

But Netscape6 is not asking for any password. It just complains that the 
SMTP server is asking for authentication and stops. ???

Any help is appreciated
