Try adding the following line to prefs.js:
user_pref("mail.allow_at_sign_in_user_name", true);

To find prefs.js depends on which OS you are running.
In Windows you'll find it wherever your particular version of Windows 
stores its application data (just use the find files feature of windows 
to look for prefs.js - it'll be in a directory that looks like:
%something%\Application Data\Mozilla\Users50\default\********.slt\

(where %something% varies between different versions of Windows and 
default is the default profile name - if you've created a different 
profile then it'll be under that name)

Under UNIX it's in ~/.mozilla/default/********.slt/

and on the Mac it's in the documents folder
