Although that is a possible solution, there is a lot of evangelism in
that bug. I think what is described below is a bug that goes way back to
the 3.x timeframe and was never fixed.
If you a) do not have a stored master password or cannot make it work or
b) you select "Cancel" or input an incorrect server password in a mail
pane, you should not be able to see old messages in the mail pane -
especially the subjects and senders. Haven't tried recently, but in
earlier Netscape releases at least the body was protected in these
cases. That isn't enough. At present, I can go to the desk of pretty
much any Netscape or Mozilla user and without authentication or even
giving totally bogus credentials - see who they have been writing to and
about what. For any of their mailboxes. This is true even if they choose
to require a login for every server session. Local files, like the Sent
folder (if kept local) are wide open to snooping by anybody with no
hacking involved. Just bring up Netscape on your boss's desk and no
telling what you may discover.
True, a skilled person could pull this info out of the mail databases
and spool files on the machine; but we shouldn't make it so easy.
At a minimum, without a correct password, the password protected
mailboxes should be blanked. And local files should optionally be
allowed password protection.
