checking mail

I just installed the 1/20/01 nightly.  I thought versions .7 and newer 
were suppose to automatically check mail when you started Mozillla.  I 
still have to do it manually.  Is there something I have to check 
somewhere to activate this feature?  Modify something in mailnews.js?
