Although this thread is certainly dead by now, I read all the posts
kinda OK, and nobody ever *did* get around to answering the question.
So, for posterity:

Select Edit | Prefereneces | Mail and Newsgroups; right there in front
of your face is "Mail Start Page" with a check box "When mail launches,
show the Start Page in the message area"
Below that is a field "Location" where you can type in your very own URL
if you want, or if you don't want anything, leave it blank or de-select
the checkbox, above...
This is for Mozilla 0.8 2001021503; I doubt that it's been removed.
Honestly.
For all the wailing and moaning about this, apparently nobody ever
bothered to to look at the fsck'ing menus...
