There has been some work done relating to S/MIME, but at this time
nobody has committed to get S/MIME support into Mozilla 1.0. The S/MIME
work will be done as part of the PSM/NSS development work, and will
occur after the completion of PSM 2.0; for more information on PSM 2.0
see
http://mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/psm/plan_20.html
For general information on PSM and NSS see
http://mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/
For information on the S/MIME work done so far see
http://mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/smime/
The problem is that the lower-level S/MIME code is not yet hooked up
into Mozilla itself; this is what needs to be done as part of future
work on PSM (post-PSM 2.0).
If you have further questions about PSM/NSS or S/MIME support in
Mozilla, the best newsgroup to use is netscape.public.mozilla.crypto.
