Too many open connections when reading News

My ISP, Telocity, won't allow more than five concurrent connections to 
the news server.  Mozilla sems to try to make as many as it can.  I had 
a look around but failed to spot any remedy. I would like to see a way 
to limit the concurrent connections and be able to read news without 
restarting frequently.
