Just as soon as all vendors can agree on a standard programming
interface. Microsoft's COM is the only successful solution I've seen.
For example, back when Visio was still owned by Visio Corp, it would use
MS Word's spell checker if it detected it on the system.
I seriously doubt Visio could have easily used a Windows port of ispell,
though... No programmatic interface.

Heh, and you see how much MS is going along with Java. :)
Seriously, though: Imagine if every auto maker designed and built every
component of every model of car. It would be really nice if software
vendors could help foster a software component marketplace...
But as long as they're busy playing the embrace and extend game, no
standard is going to emerge.
