CR/LF in Sent message under Linux

I noticed that all of my sent emails are getting written to the Sent 
file with carriage-return/linefeed line terminators.  Since I am running 
Linux, however, just linefeed would seem to be a better choice.  Is this 
supposed to work this way, or is it a bug?
