I notice it primarily with background images, and have found this in 
builds over the past week or so. Minimizing the mail/news window appears 
to refresh/un-freeze (how technical, eh?) the message.  Likewise, when 
replying to such a message, minimizing the main mail/news window will 
then allow the composition/reply window to pop.
