mark read by date?

This may be a FAQ, in which case I apologise, but when is the "mark read
by date" functionality going to be restored to Mozilla mail and news?

At the moment, the mail/news client is pretty much useless for
heavy-duty news reading, as it lacks that vital component (which is why
I'm still using Netscape 4.7 for news!). It seems odd that this has been
missing for so long without being addressed.
