Hi, everyone

I am writing this message for Mozilla users who read/write messages in 2
languages/encodings or more. I am fairly certain that if your language
is not in the Western (ISO-8859-1) group and if you occasionally read
messages in English, you would have experienced this problem. Maybe you
did not know why this is happening. Let me explain below.

If you have more than 1 mail window open and reply to a message in the
mailbox window which was not opened **last**, you might see the header
and body corrupted or displayed incorrectly in the reply window.

If so, you are probably seeing this bug. Maybe this happens sometimes
and maybe it does not. I'll explain why below.

The problem occurs under the following circumstances:

A. You opened Inbox or some mailbox and selected a message in one
language -- you see this problem most often when your language is not
Western but it could occur in Western scripts if the conditions are met.

B. After you opened a mailbox in step A, you either opened another mail
box window and selected a message in another language (typically English
message for most of us) or you opened a standalone window by selecting
another message which is not in your language.

C. You go back to the first window in A and reply to the message
selected. What happens is that the header and body gets corrupted in
the reply window.

See this image for illustration:

D. Cause: This occurs because by Bug 59229, the reply encoding reflects
the encoding of the message selected in the **last** window opened in
step B and NOT the encoding of the original message your are replying to
in step A. (Note: The problem does not happen if you are reading French
and English messages but it could happen if you are reading Russian and
English messages because their mail encodings are different. For this
problem to happen, the encodings must be different.)

I am fairly confident that many non-Western language users have had this
problem from time to time. There is no way to correct the problem once
this problem happens. The only workaround is to close all windows you
opened in step B and have only the original window open in step A. And
then engage the Reply button again.

Have you experience this problem? and frustrated? If so,

1. Please vote for the bug and let the assigned engineer know how you
feel about it. I have lobbied for this bug several times now and I will
continue to do so until it gets fixed.

2. Do you know enough about mail encoding in the code? Then please
consider helping with fixing the code. If you need help in understanding
encoding issues in mail, I will gladly help you.

- Kat
