As well as you said that you prefer a Linux solution, I think Hamster
might be nice for you.

Hamster is a local Mail (no IMAP) and Newsserver running under MS
Windows. It's open-source freeware, supports filtering, multiple
servers, multiple users, local newsgroups, filtering of mails and news,
gating of mailinglists in local newsgroups, has a mighty script language
and much more.

Furtheron, it's easy to configure, fast and reliable. You can get it at
http://home.knuut.de/tgl/own/hamtools.htm (the page is in german, but
you should be able to find the link and the program itself is
multilangual including English)
