One of the newsgroups I read has been consistently spammed over the past
several weeks, typically 10,000 messages a day. It currently sits at
116,297 messages in my local cache, and it's mind-numbingly slow to do
anything with. Recently, it's started crashing.

The messages are 30-50 lines of computer generated gibberish (e.g.
Ronald gently slimes the possum while Angie marks her computer), and so
they're easy enough to mark as read, but I can't seem to delete them.

How can I delete these from the local cache while still retaining the
legitimate posts?

Furthermore, why is there no ability to filter in the News reader?
