I have just gone through this and understand your panic but please don't cross post so much.
Here is what I did to fix my machine: I looked under .mozilla and found a folder for my profile named default/<wierd name>(I have no idea where this wierd name came from so if someone else does, I would find it historically interesting to know.) In this directory were two other folders, News and Mail. In each of these directories are subdirectories which contain your actual messages. I just updated my prefs.js to point to these folders and everything works. OK, so now your asking, "how did I figure out how to point to these new directories?" Well I first created new email and news accounts and then used the entries which were placed in my prefs.js file as templates. One important lesson learned. ONLY edit the file after you have closed all of netscape. Make your changes and then re-open netscape to test.
