Uncheck View|Message. This will close the "message pane" in the lower 
right (you'll have to doubleclick to open the messages in their own 
windows) and give you the chance to select a message without opening it.

The procedure should be identical to Netscape 6.2, unless something 
changed in recent Mozilla builds.
