Threads with Phantom Unread Messages

Sometimes, while viewing in Thread mode, threads will have the little 
green arrow and underlining, indicating an unread message when there are 
none.  This is remniscent of the problems with phantom unread messages 
in the newsgroups.  Any fix on this yet?  Why does it keep fixing and 
breaking?
