Depends on the way in which you use the tool. Your method says that "if the systray icon is still there, then I still have new messages to read, regardless of what is done with the mail tool". Another way of using it is: "once you see the flag there, then you switch to the mail program, and its then your responsibility to check for the new messages. The new_message counter on the inbox will still indicat how many are un-read. This way you can conciously decide to NOT read some of the new messages, and put the mail program away knowing that only SUBSEQUENT NEW messages will be shown by the systray flag." Thats the way I'd prefer to use it. sTu.
