Enigmail is very much an inelegant hack at the moment, and is far from complete. If you would like to help improve it, you are more than welcome!
For example, enigmail uses command line pgp/gpg for encryption. This is somewhat fragile, and it would be much better to use mozilla's own NSS to carry out the encryption/decryption using the openPGP specs. However, that would be a major undertaking!
