Yeah, I agree, that new pop-up is way over the top. I think they are 
trying to emulate the "help" bubbles in XP (they annoy me as well, so 
I've turned them off).

Looking at the prefs I don't think you can (and still have the systray 
icon). "Show an alert" applies to both AFAICT.

BTW, have you seen any strange effects with this? I was browsing a web 
site when, suddenly, my whole screen turned white. I could see and move 
the mouse cursor but there was no keyboard or mouse button response. 
Hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del and opening the Task Manager I found a (separate) 
Mozilla task, "Downloading alert.xul". I killed that off an all returned 
to normal. So I guess alert.xul is the file in question, although I had 
seen this pop up once already, so why it had to d/l it I've no idea.
