4. LONDON MARDI GRAS SUCCESS

The large crowd at London Mardi Gras heard Ken Livingstone announce he is to set up a
partnership register so that same-sex couples can have their relationships formally
recognised for purposes such as hospital visiting rights. The massive event at
Finsbury Park saw a string of top name entertainment and we danced in some of the
biggest club tents we've ever seen. Only one downpour of rain did not dampen the fun.
Earlier thousands of people, representing a wide variety of lesbian and gay groups,
joined the March from Hyde Park to remind everyone that we are still fighting for
equality.

5. WEST END CLUBS MAY CLOSE AT 1am

Westminster Council is considering forcing clubs to close at 1am
 - and new licenses at 11pm - because residents consider the area has reached
saturation point for entertainment. The gay scene led the recovery of Soho after the
last recession, but now areas such as Vauxhall are becoming the Mecca of gay venues
where there are fewer residents living nearby.

6. COMMUNITY NEWS

CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE IN COURT CLIMBDOWN

A nurse - who accused Glasgow City Council of contravening Section 28 of the Local
Government Act by supporting local gay groups including HIV charity Phace West and
Glasgay arts festival -has accepted defeat and let her court action fall before it
was heard.

Sheena Strain was backed by the Christian Institute which had threatened to mount
similar action against some English councils, and possibly health authorities for
distributing health education to gay men. 'Their attack on our services was founded
on misinformation, hysteria and prejudice,'; said Charlie McMillan, chief executive
of PHACE West. 'They would not listen to the facts, rather they chose a course of
action that would get them maximum publicity and cause huge disruption...they have
been left with egg on their face

NAIL BOMBER GETS SIX LIFE SENTENCES...

...after unanimous guilty verdicts at his trial at the Old Bailey. Nail-bomber David
Copeland admitted he was racist and homophobic, explaining that he chose the Admiral
Duncan pub in Soho because it was 'full of gay men hugging each other'. He regarded
homosexuals as 'perverted and degenerates' and 'no use to society'. While he heated
black people he had told police 'I would prefer a black or Asian man to a gay white
male'.

Responding to the verdict Stonewall the lesbian and gay rights group, called for the
Government to take urgent action to stem the increasing tide of hate crime against
minority groups. Research undertaken by Stonewall reveals that one in three lesbians
and gay men have been the victim of violent attack within the last five years.
