update - it was a permissions problem, I've got around it by chmod a+w
/var/spool/mail. But this seems like something of a bad idea (in
principle at least - doesn't matter really on this box as I'm the only
user). Why does mozilla need write access to the mail spool directory?
(when it had write permission to my mailbox file but not to the
directory it didn't work)
