Bingo, that's it. But it is tricky - because I had asked sent messages to be put in inbox, and then (for other reasons) I cancelled that and Bcc-ed them back to myself, so the inbox as "sent" folder was grayed out... but still, when I re-enabled, took it off the inbox, and the re-disabled, it worked fine.
