As a program developer I mostly check this type of things, but to be sure I retried it. Quick launch was not enabled and a restart of Mozilla gave me just as the first time a different appearance of the panes and a much smaller localstore file. The duplicates disappeared, but the behaviour remained the same (creation of duplicates). Creation of a new profile is an option I will try. Thanks, Edward
