When will I learn to leave well enough alone....

All of this concerns Moz 1.0:

Having reviewed a web site that sounded knowledgeable, I created a user.js
file (didn't have one previously) and inserted one line. The line was
supposed to force Mozilla to use my default email program for mailto: links
instead of its own. It didn't work; an error message said my mail program
wasn't correctly configured. It was, so I figured the whole setup just
wasn't designed to work well, and I deleted my user.js file. Mozilla then
would invoke countless IE screens on a mailto: link, hanging the system and
not, in any event, calling even its own mail program. So I restored all of
my registry and other configured settings from last night, i.e., before I
wrote the user.js file and before the prefs.js file was altered, if indeed
it was. No good; Mozilla still calls countless IE screens.

Would it work to restore my last backup of my prefs.js file? What can I do
to make Mozilla work right again?
