What might work for him is an alternative to the currently supported 
layouts. I'm not an ASCII artist so just imagine the thread pane using 
the window width and the folder tree and message pane sharing the bottom 
part of the window, a bit like the current alternative layout but with 
the folder pane stealing space from the message pane rather than the 
thread pane.

Of course that would depend on a Mail module owner deciding that these 
alternative layouts deserve to be implemented...
