Forgot to say that I was using Mozilla 1.1 beta as released.
Since, I installed the latest build available and I have the same
problem. There must definitely be something broken in the AUTH mechanism.

Company policy requires SMTP AUTH to allow any _outgoing_ messages.
This is really a show-stopper here, this fixed Mozilla 1.1 could be
selected as our company-wide recommended solution for messaging (thanks
to its apparently excellent IMAP support - according to our tests).

Besides going down to the source code myself (which I won't have time in
the coming weeks at least), how could I help resolve this case ?
