This is the answer I was given at one point... I wonder whether this is 
a UNIX standard, or simply a mozilla thing. If the latter, couldn't the 
locking files go somewhere like /var/lock/?

It doesn't affect me on a single-user machine, but on a big system using 
mozilla this way any user could delete any other user's mail!
