Both of my news services require authentication.  When you set up the 
account you can indicate that athentication is required and you can 
input a username.  You can't input a password until you actually connect 
(unlike the M$ product, that lets you specify a password for each 
account prior to connecting).  I find this business of frequently 
telling the password manager  the same username/password for each 
newsgroup in the same account a bit tedious, but haven't figured out how 
to install PAN on my system yet.  It required a bunch of libraries I 
don't have, and installing from source is a new thing for me.  I 
understand PAN is the way to go for a Usenet client on Linux.  Frankly, 
I'm not too impressed with Mozilla/Netscape.  I mean, they work... and 
even have a few nice features, but some of the programming concepts are 
kluggish.
