You may check the "Advanced IMAP settings" for your IMAP account:
Server Settings -> Advanced.

Try to uncheck the checkbox "Show only subscribed folders"

My .mailboxlist contains only entries of the form mail/path/to/file, 
pathnames relative to the home directory resp. the directory where 
.mailboxlist resides. My mail folders are in a Subdirectory "Mail" in 
the home directory; to get the folders without the Mail prefix in 
mozilla, I set the "IMAP server directory" to Mail/.

Disclaimer: this applies to the Mark Crispin IMAP server running on Linux.

Works with Mozilla 1.1a on Linux. My impression is that Mozilla (on 
Linux) is not slower than OE on W98. I do not have Mozilla on W98.
