OK, I have been a long time hater of complicated monster-size email programs (I hated the old communicator mail thing - no offence guys and no flames please - I hate Outlook more). I have for the past three or four years used Calypso - small, neat, portable but has two major disadvantages: Does not run on Linux and....does not officially exist anymore, since it's creators decided it will not be supported or developed further. Would be nice if they open-sourced it but I'm not hoping much. The one thing that Calypso has (implicitly) is the ability to do what I call 'laptop computing' - allow me to access my email account(s) separately from my computer account. If my mailbox and calypso are on the computer then I have all settings and all emails with a simple double-click without worrying about the OS profile I'm working under (allowing me to change basic network settings but not change network application settings) I can do this with Mozilla mail too... but - there is always a 'but' :) - only if I painstackingly reconfigure the program for every user account I've got and reset the paths to point at the same folders - also I need to copy the address book and try to keep it synched between different profiles. Not a very nice prospect when you have 5 different profiles and you are about to reformat and reinstall but want to switch email program anyway :) . So I decided I'm going to do something about it. I'm more than willing to do all the work on the features I want myself, but I must admit that the size of the project is more than intimidating - it's downright frightening - and although I could start reading by myself I would never get the things I want done anytime soon (or even soon enough...). So if any of you guys can point to the right direction, indicate what would be a good order to tackle tasks, point to a few tutorials that would get me up to speed faster, or come right out and say "NO WAY", I would very much appreciate it. So here's my wishlist: * Have a plugin/import tool that will allow me to choose from existing mail settings which to import in the current profile. This will probably include a scanner for settings or something similar. * Be able to change the path to the local address book (maybe the properties command from file menu could allow the user to point to a different file to use instead of the default abook.mab - (I don't know if that is classified under the mail-news project but it sure is relevant when emailing) *Have a default base or root directory (call it what you like) under which to store mailboxes/account directories, defineable somewhere under the general mail/news preferences, and not this random generated pathname buried deep under the obscure Widnows settings directories - Finding the mailboxes under NT is a nightmare. *Be able to choose filter rules defined under other accounts for inclusion in the filter rules of the current account.
Yeap, that's just about it....for starters. V.- -- http://www.freemail.gr - .
