Look at View | Message Body As. You can select from Original HTML/Simple 
HTML/plain text.

You can select the message view to be plain text and switch to HTML when 
you want to.

Another option to look at is Edit | Preferences | Privacy and Security | 
Images | Do not load images in mail and Newsgroups. Also see Edit | 
Preferences | Advanced | Scripts and Plugins | Enable plugins for Mail/News
