I have used imap4 for years for my email towards the "University of Washington imap-deamon" in our BSD server.
imap4 is not proprietary. http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/cgi-bin/rfc/rfc1730.html Currently, I use NS4.8 and Mozilla 1.01, both work ok, even if Mozilla still has a way to go before being as good an imap-client as NS4.x is. I try to run OE on one of my computers twards the imap-server, it works, but OE is nothing to recommend if you run imap4. I do not know about Netscape's imap server, maybe they use some proprietary variant, but why?
