If you wish to be able to delete messages without opening them, simply find the little 'handle' in the center of the top line of the preview pane and click on it. Then you can select a header, and delete it without it being displayed. You can then go to the bottom of the header pane and click the handle again to restore the preview pane. You may find it more convenient to leave the header pane collapsed and just double click on headers to read the message, which gives the message in a resizeable window.
