This second approach could also be extended to defined 'zones' (as in IE),
where I could choose to have many different configurations:
zero-connectivity, localhost only, local domain, VPN only, ISP connectivity
only, and Internet.  It would be ideal if I was able to control other prefs
(mainly security) based on these zones.

Being able to add an ISP only zone would provide a workaround for a lot of
mail security holes.
