No, because the current symlinking stuff is for a localfile->localfile mapping; while the code I propose is for a localfile->any url mapping.
Don't other operating system's have a similar mechanism for representing a URI on disk? Doesn't Nautilus do something like this too? And what about the OSX Finder? I'm asking because maybe we could put something in Necko for this.... maybe we could put a special "Resolve"-like method on nsIFileProtocolHandler. I know Biesi suggested this as "the location" earlier, and I thought it wasn't such a great idea at the time, but now I'm not so sure it wasn't a good idea.... Thoughts?
