maybe you can use the address of the nsIChannel object?
And get notified on redirects, right?

in the case of onModifyRequest/onExamineResponse... those events occur even for redirected requests. so, it would not be an issue. the error problem is much more of an issue... since you would eventually want to remove the mapping from your global hash table (or whatever).
