IE can work on an entry URL right to a file or dir. The problem is that
it asks for root which returns a drive letter and all subsequent
navigation fails (relative to x:/.../...)
OS/2 FTPD has worked this way since it's introduction a LONG time ago.
Most FTP programs understand the volume navigation. I'm not saying it's
"right" but there is no reason for mozilla's source NOT to support the
standard OS/2 FTPD.

Yes, but Netscape 4.61 understands the OS/2 server. Mozilla just pops up
"OS/2" in a message box and doesn't even attempt an "ls". IHMO it's less
friendly than IE!
