I still have the 'smearing' problem, but that is not what I posted
about. Months ago, numerous people had problems whose symptom was
that during the process of "painting" some images, what was left on
the screen was 'horizontal white lines' marring the image. What I
was reporting was a re-occurrence of this old problem (except that
this time what was left on my screen were 'dark horizontal lines').
My own "visualization" of what might be happening is that the system
is 'painting' the image, pixel line by pixel line, when control is
taken away (e.g., to run something else - an interrupt perhaps ?).
When control returns, 'painting' of the image continues AS THOUGH IT
HAD BEEN GOING ON ALL THE TIME, instead of resuming at the previous
point. That part of the screen between the previous point and the
current point gets left 'unpainted', visible as a 'line' to the user.
At the time that this problem came up, Mike Kaply even issued a
replacement module (.dll ?) that helped (this was before nightlies).
I had hoped that the Mozilla developers would note the possible
re-appearance of a problem they probably consider fixed.

p.s. Probably could have been more specific if I could have reviewed
the past history of this 'white line problem'. But I have
neither the patience nor the motivation to figure bugzilla out.
Tried to use it on this problem - all I accomplished was to get
so frustrated that my blood pressure rose by forty points.
