All three have a setting for check mail every x minutes. 2.02 & 4.61
wait silently when the modem is disconnected but offline has not been
selected. When online, both 2.02 & 4.61 check for mail even when no
mailnews window is open.
Mozilla pops up a can't connect to server dialog if left online with
modem hung up and mailnews open, which it doesn't do with only a browser
window open.
