Probably the most important is that it ensures OS/2 users of a
state-of-the-art browser/websuite regardless of IBM budgets, decisions
etc. There's also the compiler issue: there may come a day when the
Mozilla code exceeds the capabilities of icc; for gcc, that eventuality
verges on the unthinkable. Ideologically, there's even an argument to be
made for having an open-source-compiler build of an open-source project.
Right now the biggest disadvantage of the EMX builds is the absence of
Java support, but that can likely be surmounted at some point; OTOH,
people who have compared both versions generally find the EMX faster.
Last but not least, the EMX code is the foundation of the three builds
for XFree86/2, which have a few features (e.g. MathML support) not
available in either PM version.
