Can anyone succinctly explain how the profile thingy supposed to work?

I have a directory called mozprofiles and 'set mozilla-home=
f:\mozprofiles' in config.sys.

However, when I install the .92ML version and the .98 and the Feb
18th builds to separate subdirectories, I end up with distinct
\default sub-dirs under each 'root'.

Moreoever, at some sites I get a message that some 'security
component' is not installed...

I cannot even figure out which bookmark file is being used... there
are multiple instances of the migrated version from my Netscape
sub-dir... None of these matches the real bookmark file which I would
like to use.. the one in mozprofiles..

SO.. how do I force the use of the mozprofiles sub-dir...edit each and
every prefs.js in each version?..wipe out the default sub-dirs in each
version..

Note that when I click on the 'Profile manager' and equivalent icons
in, for example mozilla218, *nothing* happens.. I get a plain blank
page instance of mozilla...

And the readme does not help...
