Open the main email/news window --> edit --> mail&newsgroups account
settings --> add account (wizard opens)

should be under Help --> about:plugins, you can however manually type 
the expression about:plugins into the location bar of the browser.
If you don't have javascript enabled you see nothing.

    Certainly Acrobat doesn't work though its

It should be enough for enabling every plugin to copy it manually into 
the plugins dir

   I then manually added it as a helper but

I don't have any helper application and all plugins work properly so. 
sorry I have no idea why it don't work. Did you set up a Mozilla_HOME 
environment variable in config.sys (maybe pointing to an improper 
directory)?
