I've had this happen to me a few beta releases back (and also on Netscape once). Your indices are trashed. Shutdown Mozilla and open your newgroups/mail folders, which ever is having the problem, and delete the indexes. Close and restart Mozilla. I think that the indices are *.msf or *.rdf.
