I hope I am not jumping to conclusions, but I *think* the problem has been solved by
wiping out my old Norman Virus Control installation (which had started with the
version shipped with eCS GA, then been updated to the beta version, then updated over
the Internet) and reinstalling the latest non-beta version from scratch and
registering with my newly purchased license key. I assume that I had ended up with
mismatched fragments of various different versions.

At the same time, the mangling of volume labels on JFS volumes seems to have ceased.

The slowness of loading to the mail/news window was the result of the "Mail &
Newsgroups" option having been deselected in Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance ->
"When Mozilla starts up, open . . . "
