Felix, the Icon Pack *.xpi files are nothing more than a zip file. If
after previewing them you find one you like, say, the Modern Icon Pack,
save the xpi file locally and rename it to *.zip and open it. The last
step's (now zip) file should contain all the icons in a directory named
"default" and a file named, "install.js" in the zip's root. Merely
extract the icon files to a convenient directory and copy/paste them to
Mozilla's default icon directory.

Of course, you may want to save them so you can easily restore them in
future builds.

I hope this helps.
