That didn't take long after all: I clicked on a link to an Acrobat document, then closed Acrobat with RMB -> Close on the Task List, then exited from Mozilla and found that I had the unkillable thread. The first program I killed (with RMB -> Close on the Task List) was ScreenSaver, and Bingo! the Mozilla thread had gone too.
