A "bypass" that worked for me:

  I was reading a document with many many html pages.  When I
  wanted to exit *back* to where I was before I started on the
  document, the 'arrow' on the "Back" button would show me a
  list of previous pages that only had entries for items from
  the current document (i.e., the list as shown was not long
  enough to go back as far as I wanted).

  So I clicked on the lowest entry in the list.  Once that page
  was displayed, I clicked on the 'arrow' on the "Back" button
  again.  This time it showed me PREVIOUS entries which *did* go
  back far enough in time so that I could return where I wanted.
