This advice is completely bogus - I shouldn't have given it. It should

basicly you do this:
create a new profile
exit mozilla
copy the old profile into the new profile directory
replace all references to the old profile location with the new profile
location
in the new profile (stuff like mail, news, prefs.js etc...)
launch mozilla
